Local police believe alcohol was a factor in a fatal accident in Kill Devil Hills Wednesday night. According to witnesses, a 44-year-old man failed to stop at a red flashing light at the intersection of Colington Road and US158 around 7:30 p.m. At the same time, a pickup truck driven by a 43-year-old man traveling south entered the intersection and struck the other vehicle. The force from the collision caused the pickup to roll and land on its top. A 51-year-old man in the passenger seat of the truck died at the scene. The wife of the 51-year-old and her sister were in the rear passenger seats. They were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital due to the severity of their injuries. The driver was taken to the Outer Banks Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also transported to Sentara Norfolk General to treat his injuries. The intersection of Colington Road and US158 remained closed for several hours following the crash for investigation and clean-up.
